Facebook’s New Strategy - Hide Facebook Likes

Soon, Facebook Likes will not be seen anymore

Instagram owned by Facebook started testing a design tweak that would no longer show the total number of Instagram Likes other users posts had received. Initially rolled out in just Canada, it covered six more countries:

  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Brazil
  • Australia
  • New Zealand

The idea is to prevent users from destructively comparing themselves to others and possibly feeling inadequate if their posts don’t get as many followers. It could also stop users from deleting posts they think aren’t getting enough Likes or not sharing in the first place. Instagram says it’s because they want the followers to focus on the photos and videos that are shared, not how many likes they get.

Sad news for new Samsung Galaxy Note 10 owners they won’t be able to get likes with their phone’s impressive image capture abilities.

After uncovering Instagram’s prototype to hide the public like counts of photos and their subsequent public experiments in several regions around the world, Facebook has followed suit and begin working to hide the public count, too.

Facebook confirmed to TechCrunch that it’s considering a test that would hide Facebook Likes, but that the test hasn’t started running yet.

App researcher Jane Manchun Wong found code inside Facebook’s Android app that hides the exact amount of Facebook Likes on a post from everyone but the original poster. Other users will just see a few reaction emoji and a note that it was liked by a friend and others instead of a specific number of other people.

Facebook has gradually been relegated to a place for sharing showy life events like marriages or new jobs while Instagram and Snapchat take over for day-to-day sharing. This move may actually just be an attempt to obscure Facebook’s decline in popularity and slow the exodus to other apps.

If it does decide to go ahead with a test, Facebook would likely do so gradually and pull back Facebook Likes if it significantly hurts usage or ad revenue.

Companies who sell Facebook Likes are mum on this, their days are numbered.

In other mobile phone news,

Android released a Focus Mode feature allowing users to disable distracting apps and select the apps they want active.

The countdown begins for the launch of iPhone 11 on September 10. Looks and features are up in the air leaks say the camera has the biggest change. Lenses might almost be invisible and the selfie camera will get a boost from 7MP to 12 MP.
