The entertainment world is and has always been quite unpredictable. It was proven once again when the news of MCU and Spider-Man split surfaced a few weeks ago. Things have gotten from bad to worse as Spidey (who people hope would be filling in for Iron Man) will not be making an appearance in the MCU. Sony has closed the door and made the split official.

It is highly likely that no Spider-Man appearance would be there in MCU Phase 4. Confirming our worst fears, Tony Vinciquerra, the CEO and Chairman of Sony Pictures, said “for the moment the door is closed” during his keynote conversation at the popular Ent & Tech summit by Variety. He also hinted that Spider-Man might appear in MCU in the long run by saying “it’s a long life.” So, fans can hope that Spider-Man can reappear in MCU phases 5 or 6.

The rift between Sony and Marvel began when Spider-man: Far from Home shattered many records and crossed the prestigious 1 billion mark. But Vinciquerra stressed that there is “no ill will” between Marvel Studios and Sony even though they failed to compromise on money matters.

Reacting to how the rift was portrayed in the media, Vinciquerra mentioned that it has been “an interesting couple of weeks” for Sony. Talking about Kevin Feige, he said the Marvel boss was “stretched incredibly thin” due to new additions planned in the MCU (like introduction of The Eternals). It was the key reason for the breakdown in talks. He also appreciated Feige and said “We had a great run with (Feige) on Spider-Man movies. We tried to see if there’s a way to work it out….the Marvel people are terrific people, we have great respect for them, but on the other hand we have some pretty terrific people of our own. Kevin didn’t do all the work.”

Vinciquerra also promised that a lot is happening in the world of Spider-Man as the second Venom film is in the works and new Spider-Man characters will also be introduced. Five or six TV series’ are also being planned that will be set in the Spider-Man world. He reiterated that Spider-Man would do “just fine” on his own. To stress that, he highlighted the success of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and the Sony-Amazon series “The Boys.” Both signify that Sony can do good on the superhero front.

We have to hope that Vinciquerra is speaking the truth and we will enjoy what Sony has in store for us. We can also hope that Spider-Man would return to MCU, even if we have to wait a couple of years!
